The ‘Fight for Water’ is a documentary film about an oil spill that happened on Feb. 28th, 2009 in Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest. When new oil pipeline broke an estimated 14,000 barrels of crude oil spilled into the Napo and Coca Rivers, both of which are tributaries of the Amazon River.
Through the eyes of the local residents, the documentary looks at not only the specific case of the Santa Rosa spill, but also the legacy of contamination of water from oil exploitation in the Amazon region of Ecuador and the struggle by the inhabitants for survival within the framework of the new environmental protection passed in the Constitutional reform of 2008. The documentary also examines another controversial topic along the border with Colombia; the impact from the 135,000 refugees and displaced people from the Colombian conflict, and the relationship between contamination of water and the human impact of the coca eradication programs that have been implemented as part of Plan Colombia.
